Postcards From the Void

Photo Spheres are user-submitted immersive panoramas of a single location that are created using Google’s Street View app and integrated into the Google Maps/Street View interface. They vary widely in content and execution, ranging from fuzzy cellphone footage to professionally-shot imagery. I was exploring the city of Sitka, Alaska, via Street View while doing research for a term paper, when I noticed what appeared to be a giant black hole coming out of the sky. I became enthralled by this particular type of glitch, and spent hours “traveling” the world in search of more. These voids, besides being visually arresting, highlight a problem inherent in the representation of space, and beg the question:

In the translation of three-dimensional space to the two-dimensional plane, what else is lost?
